Rudder work from Camelot 1/29/2007 7:09:44 PM (1 comments) Login to Add a CommentIt looks like our rudder is toasted. For some reason, there is a balsa core, and like all rudders, water has invaded the interior. Over time, the hinges have compressed the fiberglass enough that it's completely shattered under where the hinges attach.

I'm currently searching for places that rebuild rudders from scratch since the original manufacturers, Ericson, are no longer in business.

I've found two so far - Foss Foam and Idasailor.

If anyone knows of any others, I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks in advance!

After some research, we ended up having Larsen Marine rebuild the rudder. Although I have yet to see the completed work, they typically do a great job. I had considered splitting the rudder myself, clearing out the interior matter, re-joining the two halves and filling with foam. However, due to time constraints I chose to have the work done professionally. That, and I'm not particularly skilled fairing fiberglass. Overall, the cost was significantly less having the rudder rebuilt as opposed to having a new one cast from scratch. So, this year is looking good for getting out on Lake Michigan and sailing! (never did get in the water last year)
